NIGERIA STRIVING FOR PEACE AT 52
Peace has continued to be recurring decimal in Nigeria. It is a situation of the absence of war strife and problem. But since independence, Nigeria has enjoyed occasional peace no thanks to the activities of Nigerian politicians, the military and external forces. All these forces at different times in Nigeria have been a contributor to the exclusive peace in Nigeria.
Successive governments in Nigeria have embarked on concerted efforts to bring about lasting peace in the country. However, their efforts have met with brick walls in the annals of our history. Immediately after our independence in 1960 and everybody is basking in the euphoria of a free nation, there was a political upheaval in the old western region of Nigeria which led to the riots in the region. It was this singular problem that eventually led to the military take over of the reign of government in 1966. The whole country was thrown into confusion as some of the leaders of the country were killed by the rampaging, mindless military opportunists. This started a long period of military rule in Nigeria. During the period of military rule, Nigeria witnessed an upsurge in cases of security challenges. It was during the period of military rule that the country was thrown into three years civil war.
