Dipupo Osanyin:
---AGE AND MORALS
Age as we all know
refers to the number of years that a person has lived or a thing has existed
and morals on the other hand is concerned with principles of right and wrong
behaviours.
So it is literarily
expected that as one increases in age ones moral at the same time should be
developing concurrently, however we know that in the real sense it doesn’t work
that way as you see and hear of elderly ones doing some nasty things the younger
generation are not supposed to be doing. I can vividly recall the story of a
man in his late sixties and a grandfather who defiled and raped a 12year old
girl in Lagos. To anybody hearing this, you wonder what was running through the
man’s mind when he was carrying out this shameful and dastardly act.
Another instance is the
disgraceful acts of National assembly who engage themselves in physical combat
in the full glare of the press like rogues
and tyrants all in the name of
fighting for what is right, which in turn causes a lot of havoc. I saw a clip
of one of their numerous encounters where a member had to be rushed out by the
emergency crew after collapsing upon receiving a punch from a ‘pissed’
colleague. Another member’s cloth was also torn as a result of the fight. I had
to ask myself what kind of message these people be passing across to their
children concerning fighting when their own numerous fight encounters are
openly broadcasted on National T.V and has gone viral on the internet.
It’s quite fascinating
when you read about young folks doing wonderful things at a very tender age. I
read about a 13year and 14year old secondary school kids sometimes last year
who invented a urine powered generator in Lagos. For someone at that age to do
something as marvelous as that, it is sure that when that kid grows older, he
or she will do more amazing things.
The question now is;
Does the older generation lack morals and the younger generations are more
morally upright or what might actually be the problem?
