Can I have your Blackberry pin? She asked conceitedly with
a look that says “don’t tell me you don’t have a BB”. Her fake American accent
was buried under the Hi-fi speakers of the ever bubbling night club we were. I
could barely hear her despite the fact that we were closely seated, I couldn’t
really make any sense out of our conversation throughout the entire time we
spent together. To make matters worse now as I reflect my experience on my experience
that night, it is hard to tell if my inability to understand her was due to the
fact that she had a fake foreign accent or the more than regular interruption
from her ‘pinging’.
The best word to describe my female friend is ‘obsessive’,
which obviously came in the way of our acquaintance, which could be easily
related with having a conversation with a deaf. So, I decided to ignore her
question, one of the many she had asked, while she took pauses concurrently,
with her eyes glued to the imaginary phone character with full intentions of
ruining my night. I wasn’t going to answer the question because to me it’s
rhetorical but she wouldn’t take my silence for a no, she leaned close to me
and asked the question again with a look that says ‘answer or I’ll go’. I
obviously didn’t want her to go but her persistence about my Blackberry status
threw me off balance for a moment, I quickly recovered and my answer was short
and quick, ‘NO’. Her reaction was immediate, her countenance changed, the shock
in her eyes was unmistakable. Her unsaid expression was:; why and how wouldn’t
you have a Blackberry in this age and time? From that moment she became very
distant.
I met her some couple of hours ago in the company of some
friends and because it’s a Friday night, we all decided to go out and have fun.
I was stunned by my new
female friend’s almost compulsive attraction for her Blackberry phone; she
stayed glued to it throughout the night. Her fingers tapped furiously at the
tiny buttons on the keypad. She suddenly became a sight to behold- her
addiction, obsession is something to write about. Myself, my other friends and
others at the club became the audience to her little display of
madness/comedy as she would pause occasionally, a frown appearing
on her brow, at another time she would laugh out hysterically rocking back and
forth on the chair with a loud yell. She was completely oblivious of the
happenings around her.
It came to me as a shock when the barman came to take our
orders, my new female friend with her fake accent ordered for herself alone to
the tune of 7k. Not that I can’t afford to pay the bills but I just wondered
why she wouldn’t talk to me but wants to help me spend my hard earned cash. I
took an excuse to use the toilet. While in the toilet, a thought just crossed
my mind, ‘why not sneak out through the back door and let the Blackberry
addict take care of her own bills’.
I started contemplating on what to do and to my greatest
surprise i concluded to leave without telling her or my other friends who were
busy enjoying the company of their own dates.
As I write this, am inside a
cab taking me home, do you think I should go back and pay her bills or should I
just go home and sleep?
