DIPUPO OSANYIN: TOMIWA: MY IMAGINARY GIRLFRIEND
(PART 1)

As a young child, I cherished everything about relationships; seeing my uncles with their girlfriends makes me want to grow up even faster. Growing up was fun, I cherished every bit of it especially because I have an elder brother……We were like Batman and Robin, he was the main man and I was his sidekick. We both wanted the same set of things…. “To come first in all exams”, save money to buy a bicycle, learn how to drive at age 18, get ourselves girlfriends as soon as we become expert drivers, become engineers, get married at age 25, give birth to four kids (2boys, 2girls) and above all buy a “Daewoo racer” (our most cherished dream). We were such a perfect match, am sure if our mum had given birth to a third male child then, we would have ruled our neighborhood with our trouble because we were really troublesome. Despite that, we still had our fair share in adding to the childish trouble in our street. I remember a time when deflating car tyres was our major description of work, we later changed to removing our neighbors’ electricity bulb and breaking it, we were also professionals in cutting off lizards’ tail with stones and in the process breaking several Louvre blades, we were also soccer champions and we loved everything that involved getting out of our house. The only thing that was different about me and my brother was “TOMIWA”…my imaginary girlfriend.
Tomiwa, the name always kept popping into my head and the funny thing was I didn’t know any lady named Tomiwa. I initially felt it was a joke, a childish prank I was playing on myself that will be outgrown but to my greatest surprise, I had my entire relationship world built around the name Tomiwa.
Tomiwa, Tomiwa, Tomiwa…that’s the name I always get when I think about relationships.
